Background History

The idea of Liftsurf traces back to a seminar class in the German Sport University of Cologne (GSU) in 2016, as the student of the M.Sc. Sport Tourism and Leisure Management, Renato Bentes, conducted a presentation about the development of the surf market and industry in Portugal. A discussion followed with Edwin Jakob, from the Institute of Outdoor Sports and Environmental Science of the same University, the lecturer of the respective seminar. During this exchange they realised both knew a few common contacts in the Portuguese surf scene. Among them, JoΓ£o Zamith, president of the Surf Clube de Viana, the organization responsible for managing the Surf High Performance Center of Viana do Castelo (SHPC) in Portugal.

The next time Renato Bentes went to Portugal, he directly contacted JoΓ£o Zamith by visiting the SHPC. Soon they found some common ground and it was established that a synergy between the involved parts could lead to the development Β of a new partnership. The base for this cooperation would take in consideration the clear defined objectives of the SHPC and converge these with the invent of a new surf traveling concept. The Liftsurf concept is hence the product of this collaboration. It is based on a constructive interaction that contributes to the consolidation of the SPHC goals as well as allows the chance for innovation in the surf travel branch and sustainable tourism.

To this regard Liftsurf pursuits to promote and maximize the potential of this cooperation, bringing the knowledge and competences acquired at the Institute of Outdoor Sports and Environmental Science of the GSU and implementing it in the development of a more meaningful and appealing surf travel experience.

Liftsurf is a product of the entrepreneur spirit of the Student Renato Bentes but owes therefore its existence to the Institute of Outdoor Sports and Environmental Science of the German Sports University of Cologne and the management of the Surf High Performance Center of Viana do Castelo, constituted by the Surf Clube de Viana, has it was the collaboration of this two entities that allowed the circumstances for Liftsurf to arise.
